The Hospital is a 851 beds state general hospital with specialist services available to outpatient and inpatient. Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan also a teaching hospital for International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

Background

Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA) has existed as a District Hospital around 1904 on 40.1 acres of land at the center of Kuantan City. Nipah-roofed wood-based structured building marks wards. Stronger roofing buildings have begun to be built in line with the growing needs. At that time, medical disciplines, wards and services were very limited.

The founder of the hospital is believed to have been pioneered by the British who have laid the foundations of modern medical services in the country. Until the Second World War, the medical officer in charge of the hospital was made up of British people, including Dr. Frazer.

During the Japanese rule, Kuantan District Hospitah was administered by a Malay doctor named Doctor Mohamad Said. Although the country was in the battlefield, the operation of the hospital remained smooth in the provision of treatment and services to patients comprising civilians and war victims. After the conquest of Malaya by the British army in 1945, the hospital was reappointed by the British.

When the country became independent, the government realized that medical services needed to be developed in tandem with the socio-economic development of its populations. When independence was achieved in 1957, the Pahang Capital had been transferred from Kuala Lipis to Kuantan.

In line with the transfer of state administrative center, Kuantan District Hospital has also been upgraded to General Hospital. Rock structure buildings have started to add to the existing wooden buildings with new services and treatment developments.

From this moment on, the development of the Kuantan Hospital has continued to grow rapidly until the establishment of a beautiful new beauty with complete equipment.

On 3 November 1995, Majesty the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah agreed to officially open the new Kuantan Hospital building and named Kuantan Hospital as Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital (HTAA).
