Lion King Family Tree Explained

The Lion King family tree centers on Simba, the son of Mufasa and Sarabi, who marries Nala and fathers Kiara and Kion. The animated films, musical, and TV series each add branches, so the full tree depends on which version you follow.

Core Family in The Lion King (1994)

The original 1994 film establishes the main royal line of the Pride Lands. Mufasa is the king and Sarabi is the queen; their only cub is Simba. Scar, Mufasa’s younger brother, is Simba’s uncle. Nala is Simba’s childhood friend and later his mate; they have a daughter, Kiara, who appears in the 1998 direct-to-video sequel The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride. The 1994 film itself does not name Simba’s grandparents or any other ancestors.

  • Mufasa – king, son of Ahadi (in later materials), father of Simba
  • Sarabi – queen, mother of Simba
  • Scar – Mufasa’s younger brother, Simba’s uncle
  • Simba – protagonist, rightful heir
  • Nala – Simba’s mate, daughter of Sarafina (named in the musical and in some books)
  • Kiara – daughter of Simba and Nala

Expanded Tree in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride

The 1998 sequel introduces Kovu, a male lion from the Outsider pride. Kovu is the son of Zira and the late Scar, though Scar is not his biological father in the film’s dialogue; Zira says Scar chose Kovu as his heir. Kovu and Kiara fall in love and eventually unite the two prides. This film also names Zira as Scar’s most devoted follower, and she is the mother of Nuka and Vitani as well as Kovu. The family tree thus gains a rival branch: Zira’s children (Nuka, Vitani, Kovu) are not related to Simba by blood but are tied through Scar’s chosen succession.

Family in The Lion Guard (2015–2019)

The Disney Junior series The Lion Guard adds a second child to Simba and Nala: Kion, a younger son who leads the Lion Guard. Kion’s mate is Rani, a lioness from the Tree of Life, introduced in the final season. The series also names Mufasa’s parents as Ahadi and Uru (from the 1994 book The Lion King: Six New Adventures), making them Simba’s grandparents. However, those names are not mentioned in the films, so they are considered supplementary canon.

Differences in the 2019 Photorealistic Remake

The 2019 CGI remake simplifies the family tree. It keeps Mufasa, Sarabi, Simba, Nala, and Scar, but it does not include Kiara, Kion, or the Outsider pride. The remake also omits the hyena subplot’s connection to Scar’s coup, so the family relationships are identical to the 1994 film but with no sequel branches. The prequel Mufasa: The Lion King (2024) expands the backstory: Mufasa is an orphan adopted by Taka’s (Scar’s) parents, making the brothers non-biological. That film introduces Mufasa’s parents as Masego and Afua, and Taka’s parents as Obasi and Eshe, though these names come from the 2024 film and are not part of the original 1994 canon.

How the Family Tree Works in the Musical

The Broadway musical adaptation (1997) compresses the story and does not include Kiara or Kion. It does name Nala’s mother as Sarafina, who appears as a lioness in the pride. The musical also gives Scar a backstory song, “The Madness of King Scar,” but it does not change his relationship to Mufasa. For fans who only know the musical, the tree is simply Mufasa-Sarabi → Simba, and Simba-Nala → no children shown.

Common Misconceptions About the Family Tree

Many casual viewers assume Nala is Mufasa’s daughter because she is a lioness in the pride, but the films never state that. In the 1994 film, Nala’s mother is not named; the musical and tie-in books give her the name Sarafina. Another misconception is that Kovu is Scar’s biological son; he is not. Zira says Scar “chose” Kovu as his heir, but no biological link is confirmed. Also, the 2019 remake does not show Simba and Nala having any cubs, which leads some to think the remake is a prequel, but it is a standalone retelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are Simba’s grandparents?

In the original films, Simba’s grandparents are never named. The 1994 tie-in book Six New Adventures names them Ahadi and Uru, and the 2024 film Mufasa: The Lion King gives Mufasa’s parents as Masego and Afua. Neither set of names appears in the main animated films.

Is Nala Mufasa’s daughter?

No. Nala is a lioness from the same pride, but the films do not reveal her parents. The musical and some books name her mother as Sarafina, but she is not related to Mufasa.

Are Kovu and Kiara related?

No. Kiara is Simba and Nala’s daughter; Kovu is Zira’s son and Scar’s chosen heir. They are not blood relatives, which is why their relationship is not incestuous.

What is the family tree in the 2019 remake?

The 2019 remake only includes Mufasa, Sarabi, Simba, Nala, and Scar. It does not show any cubs for Simba and Nala, so the tree ends with them as the new king and queen.

Does Scar have any children?

In the animated films, Scar has no biological children. In The Lion King II, he is said to have chosen Kovu as his heir, but Kovu is Zira’s son, not Scar’s.
