Background

Hospital Langkawi is located at Bukit Tekoh, Padang Mat Sirat Road, 7 km from Kuah Town and 10 km from Langkawi International Airport, Padang Mat Sirat. It covers an area of ​​53 hectares. Hospital Langkawi is the only hospital available on this island. There are no private hospitals or other government here. The island of Langkawi is about 110,000 people. There are 8 private clinics and 3 health clinics on the island.

Hospital Langkawi started providing services from 1915 in Pekan Kuah. As a result of development efforts and duty-free island standards a new hospital completed with staff quarters and equipment was built on June 09, 1993 by turnkey by Skanska Pamara JV from Sweden and fully completed on November 15, 1995 with the construction cost of RM 72 million.

The new hospital started operating and moved from its original site on 22.11.1995 with a total of 110 beds. On 22.02.2002 the hospital was inaugurated by DYMM Tuanku Sultan Kedah Darul Aman.

Hospital Langkawi is a rooting Hospital with an existing specialist now just a General Medical specialist, General Surgery, Otoputics, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Anesthesia. Other specialties offered at the Hospital Langkawi are periodically with specialists traveling from Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, Alor Star to the scheduled schedule.

These specialties include Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, ORL, Dermatology, Neprology, Chest, Diagnostic Imaging and Children.

There are 110 beds with 7 wards in this hospital with filling rate (BOR) between 67% – 75%. The wards are Male, Female, First & Second Class, Children, Maternity, Intensive Care and Neonatal Nursery. Outpatient treatment is only available at Specialist Clinics that receive patients according to an appointment and an Emergency Unit that receives patients all the time. Hospital Langkawi also runs cases requiring surgery with the functioning Surgery Hall at all times.

The workforce at the Hospital Langkawi now occupies an average of 89%. There are 5 Experts with 21 Medical Officers. Medical Officer officers are housed in Emergency, Surgical, Medical, Midwifery & Gynecology, Autopsy, Radiology, Anesthetics and Children’s Unit.

Apart from the 2 permanent Medical Officers at the Child and Bius Unit, 19 other Medical Officers are only in their respective disciplines during office hours and afterwards carry out their duties on call in general. One is in charge of an active call at the Emergency Unit and one in ward. While another was on passive call for case of surgical case and accompanied by reference case.

Medical services and treatments provided at the Hospital Langkawi are limited. These include general surgery, general medicine, hemodialysis, midwifery and gynecology, autopsy, diagnostic imaging, childhood, anesthetics and anxiety.

This service is provided on-going as well as follow-up treatments and outpatient specialist clinics. Patients requiring more or more specialized treatment will be referred to Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Star Hospital by ferry. The ferry will be on a special rental or use passenger ferry depending on the case, from Kuah to Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis and then taken to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital with an ambulance.

  1. We will prioritize critical and semi-critical cases at the Emergency and Trauma Department with the following waiting times:
  • All critical cases (Red Zone) are treated immediately.
  • All critical partial cases (Yellow Zone) are treated within 15 minutes.
  • Other cases (Green Zone) will be seen according to the patient’s priority.

2. Outpatient Clinic Services and Expert Clinic will be given by turn and / or patient condition. Priority will be given to children, pregnant women, senior citizens and people with disabilities.

3. Information will be provided to customers regarding illness and care.

4. The confidentiality of personal information, illness and care provided to patients is guaranteed.

5. Clean, comfortable and secure facilities and environment are available.
