Background

History of the Hospital Duchess Of Kent, Sandakan began as early as 1900. The first hospital building was built at the crossroads between Singapore Street and Jalan Bukit Bendera. It consists of several wooden and kajang buildings, which can meet the health and medical needs of the residents around Sandakan at the time. Unfortunately during the Second World War it was destroyed when bombed by the Japanese Army.

After the war ended, the British had begun building a new hospital at the site of the existing hospital site today. This new two-storey type hospital was built in 1951 and is the first modern hospital in the State of Sabah. The building was fully completed in 1953. The official opening of the hospital was completed by HRH Duchess of Kent then on October 20, 1952. It was named the Hospital Duchess Of Kent in conjunction with its peritial name.

Starting in 1996, the Hospital Duchess Of Kent began to change with the addition of building blocks along with the addition of the type of services provided to the community. In 1999, the Specialist Clinic Building was built and started operating with a project cost of RM 31 million. Two years later, Building Integration Building was completed in 2001 with a cost of RM 2.2 million. The following year, in 2002, RM2.24 million Forensic Unit Building was completed.

In line with the current needs, as well as efforts to increase and expand the medical services facility in this hospital, the 3 – 6 Floor Block Block Building was constructed and completed in 2007 at an expenditure of RM 44.4 million which led to the addition of 168 beds.
