Background

In 1910, with the site selection proposed by Dr. Samuels, the government has built a hospital called “Federal Lunatic Asylum”. The construction was completed in 1911 and Dr. W.F. Samuels was appointed the first Medical Superintendent.

In the early stages of the development of “Federal Lunatic Asylum” is a psychiatric foundation containing 3 male wards and a female ward separated by a kitchen space. In 1928 the “Federal Lunatic Asylum” was renamed to the “Central Mental Hospital” and in the early 70’s the name was changed to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta to show a more positive image on the development of psychiatric treatment. Now Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is the largest Psychiatric Foundation of the four foundations in Malaysia. It is located near Tanjung Rambutan Town, 16 km towards the East Coast of Ipoh City.

The original area of Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is 544 acres of which approximately 300 acres are used to build various buildings and the balance is used for patient rehabilitation activities such as agriculture, livestock and fisheries. However, in 2007, 41 acres were handed over to the construction of Ulu Kinta Allied Health Sciences College. There were 78 wards in the hospital comprising 53 male wards, 25 wives. The number of official bed was 2,600 but the application was sent to MOH to reduce it to 2,200 as the psychiatric care service in the community was being encouraged and enhanced.

Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta is now the largest Psychiatric Foundation in Malaysia and in 2011 Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta will be 100 years old. During that period various achievements, successes and awards were received. Hopefully in future the excellence will continue to prosper the hospital.
