THE FACULTY OF LANGUAGES & LINGUISTICS

The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics (FLL), University Malaya, was initially set up as a Language Centre on 9 March 1972. The Centre was responsible for conducting language courses relevant to the needs of the university.

On 27 April 1996, the Faculty began to offer courses for its undergraduate programme: the Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics. There are currently, nine language specializations for this programme: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Tamil. Students can do a Minor in Translation Studies, and there are double degree options as well.

Other languages offered as elective subjects are Burmese, Iban, Korean, Russian and Thai, thus truly embodying the theme of ‘communicating across borders’. The Faculty will also be offering an elective course on Malaysian Sign Language in the 2018/2019 academic session.

FLL also offers three postgraduate programmes: Master of Arts (Linguistics), Master of English Language Studies, and a PhD by research. We continue to offer Malay language classes to international postgraduate students. FLL’s Language Unit provides English Language courses for undergraduate students, and offers summer courses, and customised English language programmes to exchange students and corporate clients. The Faculty also provides translation, editing and proofreading services.

FLL has developed significantly since it became a Faculty in 1996 with a team of more than 100 lecturers and language teachers. The Faculty comprises a Language Unit and the following four departments:

The Department of Asian and European Languages

The Department of Arabic and Middle Eastern Languages

The Department of English

The Department of Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics

FLL has well-equipped and multipurpose teaching and learning facilities, computer laboratories, student learning spaces and a Language Library.

The academic staff at FLL are actively involved in research in the areas of Applied Linguistics, Discourse Studies, Language Structure and Sociolinguistics. Three subject areas covered at the Faculty are ranked top 100 in the 2017 QS World University Rankings by Subject: Linguistics, Modern Languages, and English Language and Literature.
